001/365

After 40+ years of first-hand experience, one aspect I’ve come to understand about myself is that patience is not one of my strongest qualities. Often, I find myself wanting to see the result before putting in the necessary effort to earn it. However, across these four decades I’ve watched as life has a funny way of intervening. It holds back what I haven’t been ready to receive.
Over the last five or so years, I’ve thought a lot about the 365 project. I even started and quit twice previously. But the desire still lingered. Pestered. Strangely reminding me how I’d quit on something I thoroughly enjoy.
It wouldn’t let me go.
And like my prior attempts, today wasn’t ideal. I got busy. Something came up. I thought of a way out. As I sat, I reflected on this. Should these “things” derail, or become another reason to put off what could be done - even if trying again? Like a New Year’s resolution, does a project need an arbitrary date to start something new?
Why not now?
What is my goal in all of this? The words might not always be fruitful and picture might not make the mantle, but that’s exactly why the work needs to be done. It’s to see who I become over the next year and how my vision changes through the use of words and a photograph.
